The movement toward natural beauty has been empowering women to practice self care using natural beauty products for quite some time. Similar to many of these women, I became tired of plastic-based beauty products clogging my pores and being harsh on my skin.
So, finally, I took the role of a cosmetic chemist—that is, if a cosmetic chemist worked in a kitchen…
As it turns out, several common ingredients found at the grocery stores can be purposed into great facial cleansers to clear a long day of smog, foundation and mascara.
For all the women who’ve had it with plastic-based, ineffective beauty products, here’s a guide to creating two different facial cleansers. Each cleanser contains simple, but surprisingly effective, ingredients.
Coconut and Honey Facial Cleanser
As its name suggests, this facial cleanser only contains organic coconut oil and honey.
The anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of honey make it a perfect solution to acne breakouts, especially large red pimples that can’t seem to possibly become any redder. This anti-inflammatory component is also what makes the honey suitable for sensitive skin.
Aside from breakouts, honey also absorbs water, making it a great skin moisturizer in warmer temperatures.
In colder temperatures, it is not recommended to use solely honey because of its drying properties. This is where coconut oil’s benefits complement those of honey.
Coconut oil absorbs quickly and deeply into pores. Even better, it does not leave behind as greasy of a residue, unlike many lotions.
Coconut oil also alleviates skin after a sunburn by moisturizing the skin and supplying it with the oil’s anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
Just what most people want in a face cleanser, coconut oil effortlessly helps remove make-up. I tried using this facial cleanser for at least one week and, every night, it would even dissolve my waterproof mascara and matte lipstick.
This facial cleanser spreads easily onto skin and left my skin feeling smooth after every use. It even cleared the dry skin on my cheeks.
Citrus Facial Cleanser
The citrus facial cleanser contains only fresh lemon juice and honey.
Mirroring the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits of honey, lemon juice is also an ideal facial cleanser many people stand by. The boosted antibacterial properties from the lemon juice with the moisturizing properties of honey make this facial cleanser perfect for acne treatment. Due to the acidity of the lemon juice, those with more sensitive skin may want to begin using this cleanser gradually until their skin becomes used to the effects.
Another plus — lemon juice helps brighten skin!

My skin became a little dry after using this cleanser for a few days, but if you don’t have sensitive skin, I believe this product would not dry out your face like it did mine. My skin did, however, become quite glowing! So, if you want more radiant skin, try this cleanser!
